It’s Always “About Time” to Enjoy Every Day

It could certainly have something to do with the fact that I’m alone in a hotel room on a Sunday in Singapore that I’ve actually taken the time to write this, but nonetheless, I did want to stop and reflect how much I value my normal day to day life at home. It probably also doesn’t hurt that I just re-watched About Time, hence the title of this post.

I’d like to think that I have always tried to enjoy each day, but it really jumped out at me when I first saw that movie a couple of years ago. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth a watch, even if you aren’t a big romantic comedy fan. The underlying message from the main character’s ability to go back in time is that you really do have consciously focus on enjoying your life and the people in it.

Cliche? Sure, but that doesn’t make the premise any less worth doing. And from the movie’s perspective it also doesn’t hurt that they do a great job of building empathy for the main characters (including the perfectly cast Rachel McAdams) along the way.

So what am doing to make sure I enjoy every day to the fullest? Sometimes it’s the big things, sometimes it’s the little ones. I want to be like “Tim” at the end of the movie.

I try to let Korey sleep in on the weekends and get both kids out of the house so she can, because I know she deserves it, and that makes family time later all the better. I take Crosby to the park most days, because I know pretty soon, it won’t be cool to hang out with dad. Carlyn’s now getting to the point where she gets excited to see me, and when she starts laughing, there’s no better sound in the world. I talk to my family as often as I can, and we stay close even though we live 1000 miles apart. (Mom and Dad if you’re reading this — you should move to Austin.)

Sure there will be stressful days, and as they say in the movies, some days you would only want to go through once even if you could go back in time. But in the end, if you look for the positives in life, I truly believe you’ll find a lot more of them and be much better off for doing so.
